After finishing university, Jennifer Gwinnut took on the role of Digital Marketing Assistant at Interactive Web (iWeb) Solutions Ltd, which she secured through Unitemps. Jennifer tells us more about how Unitemps helped her secure a graduate job.
Why did you start temping?
I hadn’t come across Unitemps before and stumbled on them by chance through a vacancy they were advertising – a Graduate Digital Marketing Assistant Internship. Fresh out of university, I wasn’t set on one specific career path and was unsure about my next move – I’d also had little success with other job applications. The job looked really interesting and it utilised most of the skills that I had acquired from my English Literature degree, so I decided to take the plunge. Now I’m seven weeks in and loving it!
What kinds of roles have you taken on in your temping career?
I’ve only had the one position with Unitemps, which is the one with iWeb, but it’s been a huge learning curve. As the weeks have gone by, the responsibilities I’ve taken on in the position have grown. I mainly spend all my days coming up with interesting, insightful and relevant content ideas for our clients, as well as for the iWeb blog.
As well as this, I also manage most of the iWeb social media – Twitter and Linkedin. I use these channels to promote the blogs that I and other iWeb colleagues write, to keep a public presence and to build online relationships.
How did the flexibility of temping help you?
I can see why a flexible placement, like the type Unitemps offer, are beneficial as they can allow you to test the waters in many different career paths. They allow you to move on if you feel that a certain path isn’t for you – with no regrets and no embarrassment.
If you could give temps one piece of advice, what would it be?
If you’re worried about the temporary element of the positions offered by Unitemps, don’t worry! Often when taking temporary positions they lead onto other opportunities or even permanent work within the same company. Even if the position is temporary, having relevant experience on your CV is always useful for taking the next steps in your career.
